A leading figure in the power and automation technology sector has announced a new marine application to help in the drive for energy efficiency.

The ABB group is introducing a new direct current (DC) electrical system for implementing in marine systems, which forms part of a revival in power solutions using DC electricity.

And ABB thinks it'll bring highly efficient power distribution and electric propulsion to a wide range of nautical vessels.

The company notes that "with an onboard DC solution, [the application] can improve a ship's operational efficiency by up to 20 percent compared with traditional AC powered systems."

ABB also claims that the hardware lowers the electricity footprint by up to 30 per cent, courtesy of the removal of bulky transformers and switchboards.
