The European Commission has announced plans for a new fund in order to help countries across the continent develop sources of low-carbon energy.

Energising Development will help countries across Europe to continue their push for sustainable development by way of a multi-million euro fund.

Ultimately the fund will be looking to help countries reach a wider target of providing sustainable energy to 50 million people by 2030.

Announcing the plan at the EU Sustainable Energy For all Summit in Brussels this week, José Manuel Durão Barroso, president of the European Commission, said it was vital the continent embraced green energy.

He said there was "clear scientific evidence" that countries needed to start looking at green energy, adding: "we need to act upon this advice".

According to a recent Flash Eurobarometer, 77 per cent of respondents felt the main future source of energy for developing countries should be renewable energies.
